Moving objects in particular was not very intuitive. Perspective: Homeowner with 3D modeling experience (but also awareness of usability/UX issues.) I last tried Google SketchUp about 4 years ago and found it very clunky. I've attached some photos from the HomeByMe blog to show what it can do. In the mean time I'll probably keep using HomeByMe, and save a new version every 10 minutes. Very interested in hearing about any other software that's around. It's a shame because it's a very nice piece of software. The company has been trying to fix it for about 2 months, so I'm nervous about investing any more time on it. HOWEVER, my project file has just become corrupted and I can no longer get the 3D views. The software is enjoyable to use if a little slow at times. Enough to do concept but IMHO I don't think it's good enough for interior design, even though that's what they're targeting. It doesn't do exteriors, and it's range of windows, doors, furniture and materials is fairly limited. For my current project I'm now using HomeByMe. If I were still on Windows 7 I'd still be using for my current project. Only supports a flat block of land, and can't do split levels or anything like that. Has a satisfactory furniture and materials library. The software is not really supported any more, and doesn't work in windows 8. I then settled on MyVirtualHome, which was clunky but satisfactory, especially because you could walk around the house in first-person perspective, just like a computer game. Everything had to be extruded from a shape, and you ended up working with surfaces. I had a serious go at using Google SketchUp, but found it extremely difficult to move a wall once it was drawn. I'm not a professional, just wanted to play with ideas and show my architect. Unlike the fencing solution, designing a deck is much like designing a room, easy and without any unnecessary details.About 3 or 4 years ago I searched around for software to do this. You can also use Sweet Home 3D to design a deck for your home. There are some sample fence designs you can choose from, but the number is very limited and there is a great chance you won’t find what you’re looking for. For instance, if you’d like to design a fence, instead of having the fencing wizard set it up for you, you’ll have to manually place each pole individually and then customize it further if you see the need. While many other similar apps have wizards and step-by-step guides to help you with this process, this software doesn’t. Although you can create fences, decks and patios, you won’t have much help in doing so. Sweet Home 3D has a very limited offer of landscaping tools. Since this home design app is missing a roofing wizard, it’s best used for outlining what you’d like to see on your final plan. As you create rooms, you can drag and drop these items, changing them along the way to best fit their particular purpose. This feature lets you get a clearer picture of how your finished design will look.Īlthough it has an objects library with a few more than 100 items and around 25 different vegetation and outside fixtures, if you’re trying to create a simple outline you’d like to serve as a guide to what you want, this number should be enough. The split screen view also prevents the interloping of the two options, so if you switched from a 2D view, it would seem as if you were hovering over your design in 3D. This is an excellent commodity since it gives you a more complete overview of the objects added. This means that once you add an object to the floor plan you’ll be able to view it in both available views at the same time. The app also has an added convenience of allowing you to see the 3D view simultaneously with the 2D plan through a split screen. All objects you add can be fully customized to fit your design. Sweet Home 3D prides itself with its easy drag-and-drop feature that lets you choose which items you’d like to add to your design and then simply drag them into the 2D view plan. If you don’t have the know-how to create a floor plan from scratch, this 3D home design software lets you download a sample plan from the online gallery or you can import a sketch, but you can only use it as a background image without the option of tracing or editing.
